Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs promote deliberate efforts to increase the number of children that can safely walk and bicycle to school. By encouraging active transportation, they complement ongoing community- and school-based programs and activities intended to improve the overall health and wellness of children.
Safely walking and bicycling to school can increase a childs sense of independence and self-reliance, strengthen the bond between the school and the community, and provide the opportunity for students to socialize in a healthy way as they travel to school. In addition, increasing the number of students that walk and bicycle to school can help schools to reduce energy use, improve air quality, and reduce traffic congestion while empowering students to effect positive change.
The Safe Routes to School Guidebook for the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region (Guidebook) and the SRTS Site Assessments for the participating schools listed below were prepared by GTC as part of its Unified Planning Work Program. They support ongoing GTC efforts to assist schools in developing SRTS programs and promote transportation safety for all modes and users throughout the Genesee-Finger Lakes region.
The Guidebook describes the elements of SRTS programs, opportunities and barriers affecting the ability of children to safely walk and bicycle to school in the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region, and the process that schools and stakeholders can follow to implement an effective SRTS Program.
The Site Assessments provide specific recommendations for engineering, operational, and program activities intended to improve the number of students that safely walk and bicycle to school in each of the respective schools, including planning-level cost estimates and suggested prioritization for program implementation.
